…and where you can grab one at an affordable price.
If you haven’t heard the buzzword yet, your ears will be aching with “Dior Saddle bag” soon enough. The It Bag of the season is a re-launch of the year 2000 Christian Dior Saddle Bag that graced the arm of every then-It Girl from the O.C.’s Mischa Barton to Carrie Bradshaw.
The funky design and plethora of patterns/colors the bag comes in matches the confused, semi-western, bold-label, color explosion that made up noughties fashion.
More than a seasonal trend, the horse-saddle shaped iconic wonder grew in popularity from 2000 to 2006, when then-creative director of Dior, John Galliano, launched 12 new, unique versions of the saddle bag. It was saddle bag hey-day.
But between 2007-2008, as the housing bubble burst and the Recession set in, $3000 bags that held little more than a flip phone and a tissue weren’t fashionable anymore.
Dior discontinued the bag under Raf Simons, creative director from 2012-2015. But then, a fashion miracle happened, and as the economy began to pick up again, celebrities picked up their now-vintage saddle bags once again. Soon rumors began to spread of Dior re-launching the bag so iconic of early 2000’s fashion.
And then KPop star CL showed off her own vintage Dior bag on instagram in 2016. Given Kpop’s heavy influence over U.S. fashion trends lately, it’s no surprise that CL gave this old trend the push it needed to be taken seriously again. In her destroyed, bold-colored sweater, she makes the bag look more street and less posh.
But are people going to want to pair the bag with low-waist jeans and bubble-gum pink shirts? Well, now that Juicy Couture tracksuits are back, it won’t be long before we’re drowning in Paris Hilton fashion no-no’s.
IMO, the only redeeming quality is that with their neutral, wild-west-inspired design, these bags will soon be seen in more than just women’s hands.
